COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of five persons killed on South Carolina roadways from Friday, August 25, at 6 p.m., until Sunday, August 27, at midnight.

As of August 27, 629 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 661 highway deaths during the same time period in 2016.
Of the 438 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2017, 209 were not wearing seat belts.
Through midnight August 27, 84 pedestrians have died compared to 92 in 2016; 76 motorcyclists have died compared to 98 in 2016; and 13 bicyclists have died compared to 16 in 2016 on state roads and highways.
