Columbia – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of nine persons killed on South Carolina roadways during the Labor Day travel period, which started Friday, August 31, at 6 p.m. and concluded Monday, September 3, at 11:59 p.m.
There were six fatalities during the 2017 Labor Day travel period.
Additionally, SCDPS is reporting a preliminary number of 262 traffic deaths during the “100 Deadly Days of Summer,” compared to 237 traffic deaths during the same time period in 2017. The “100 Deadly Days of Summer” runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year.

As of September 3, 663 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 664 highway deaths during the same time period in 2017.
Of the 463 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2018, 235 were not wearing seat belts.
Through September 3, 97 pedestrians have died compared to 94 in 2017; 70 motorcyclists have died compared to 78 in 2017; and 12 bicyclists have died compared to 13 in 2017 on state roads and highways.
