COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of 10 persons killed on South Carolina roadways during the 102-hour July 4th travel period, which started on Wednesday, July 3, at 6 p.m. and concluded on Sunday, July 7, at 11:59 p.m. Four of these deaths occurred during the weekend period from Friday, July 5, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, July 7, at 11:59 p.m.
In 2018, there were three deaths during the 30-hour July 4th travel period, which occurred from July 3 at 6 p.m. through July 4 at 11:59 p.m. In 2017, during the last 102-hour travel period, there were 14 deaths.

As of July 7, 472 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 520 highway deaths during the same time period in 2018.
Of the 472 people who have died in 2019, 312 had access to seatbelts, and 153 were not wearing seat belts.
Through July 7, 82 pedestrians have died compared to 77 in 2018; 47 motorcyclists have died compared to 57 in 2018; and 15 bicyclists have died compared to nine in 2018 on state roads and highways.
