COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of five persons killed on South Carolina roadways during the weekend period beginning Friday, January 24, at 6:00 pm until Sunday, January 26, at 11:59 pm.

As of January 27, 41 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 64 highway deaths during the same time period in 2019.
Of the 41 people who have died in 2020, 30 had access to seatbelts, and 16 were not wearing seat belts.
Through January 26, nine pedestrians have died compared to eleven in 2019; one motorcyclists have died compared to three in 2019; and zero bicyclists have died compared to one in 2019 on state roads and highways.
