Family of Patrolman Harlan Smith with Director Smith and Col. OliverColumbia, SC -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety held a highway dedication ceremony today in Pageland in honor of fallen Patrolman Harlan M. Smith who was killed in the line of duty on September 23, 1940, in Chesterfield County.

Patrolman Smith, a native of Roebuck, was 26 years old at the time of his death. He was on duty in Chesterfield County when he was killed after his patrol motorcycle crashed into a tree one-half mile from the Pageland town limits.

SCDPS officials, Rep. Richard “Richie” Yow, District 53, and officials from the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s office, joined the only surviving family member of Patrolman Smith, Ms. Robin Smith Stone at today's ceremony, which was held at Providence Baptist Church.

“There are 50 names etched on the memorial wall, and Patrolman Smith, who lost his life in 1940, represents the 10th name of those we honor,” said SCDPS Director Leroy Smith. “These troopers’ legacy extended beyond their service to the Patrol. Their legacy lives on in their communities.”

“Even now, some 76 years later, there is that bond, which remains -- regardless of how many years have passed since a Patrolman’s death,” said SCHP Col. Mike Oliver. “Patrolman Smith wore this uniform, and he took the oath – just like we do today -- committing to serve and protect our state’s citizens.”

The SC Department of Transportation has placed signs on South Carolina Highway 9, which has been named the “SCHP Patrolman Harlan M. Smith Memorial Highway.”

Patrolman Smith joined the South Carolina Highway Patrol in 1940, shortly before he lost his life serving the State of South Carolina. He was a graduate of Roebuck High School and Robinson’s Business School and he also attended Wofford College.

Patrolman Smith was survived by his wife, his parents, and two brothers.
