COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of nine persons killed on South Carolina roadways during the Thanksgiving holiday period, which ran from Wednesday, November 23, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, November 27, at midnight. Three of the deaths occurred during the weekend, from 6 p.m. Friday through midnight Sunday.

As of November 27, 2016, 894 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 900 highway deaths during the same time period in 2015.
Of the 574 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2016, 282 were not wearing safety belts.
Through midnight November 27, 125 pedestrians died compared to 114 in 2015; 131 motorcyclists died compared to 130 in 2015; and 24 bicyclists died compared to 15 in 2015 on state roads and highways.
