Patrolman First Class Peeples was on duty in Colleton County when he pursued a motorcyclist for speeding. After the motorcyclist stopped, he shot Patrolman First Class Peeples several times and the patrolman died from his injuries the following day. The suspect was captured and charged with murder. Patrolman First Class Peeples was a five-year veteran of the Highway Patrol and a native of Barnwell County.
